In 1990, to capitalize on the publicity surrounding "The Wizard of Oz" movie's fiftieth anniversary, Turner Entertainment Co. and DIC produced a thirteen-episode animated series. The show aired on ABC Saturday mornings during the 1990-91 TV season. The series began with a two-part story titled "Rescue of the Emerald City" and concluded with the episode "Hot Air." The series featured the Wicked Witch of the West and her sidekick Truckle the flying monkey, who traveled around Oz hatching evil plans to take over the land and steal Dorothy's ruby slippers. Dorothy, along with her pet dog Toto, returns to Oz and meets with Glinda the Good Witch, who informs them that Oz needs their help to thwart the Wicked Witch's schemes. Dorothy reunites with her friends—the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion—as well as receiving assistance from Glinda the Good Witch of the North.
